Mixed beaches

The beach always had so much to offer. I loved going to the beach. I loved hearing the calming waves, the sun burning on my skin whilst the sun is slowly hiding behind those big waves and then the wind in your hair whilst you’re covered in sand… 2017 was the last time I went whilst I was dressed immodestly and then I went one last time, back in 2023. I haven’t visited the beach ever since.

Even though I am not a man, I have decided not to go to beaches anymore. You often hear of men not being allowed to go to mixed beaches but what about the שמירת העינים for women? I don’t want to be in company with indecently clad men and women around me. So yes that was an offer I had to make for modesty. But by offering something up for the sake of wanting to follow the correct path you’re drawing yourself closer to Hashem. I believe that any woman would do well by not going to mixed beaches, including you dear reader. Let’s look at the following:

The prohibition of “Lo sasuru” also applies to women and girls as well. A female is not allowed to look at men or inappropriately dressed individuals with an intent of sin. She is also forbidden to look for pleasure at a man because of his gender, or at impropriety. However, she is allowed to gaze (not only glance, as by a man) at a man without any of the above intentions.

(Chinuch, mitzvah 383; Shevet Halevi vol. 5, 197:2; Igros Moshe EH 1:69; Chut Shani EH p. 43; see Be’er Moshe vol. 4, 147:23)

A woman may look at a tzaddik or erliche Yid even if she derives pleasure from gazing at his countenance. As this pleasure is not a result of looking at “the man,” but rather at the holiness that cloaks him, and her desire to learn from his pious ways, this is therefore permitted.

(Levushah Shel Torah 79:11)

How can we as women go to a mixed beach with all of the pritzus involved? We aren’t supposed to stray after our eyes either. We have to stay away from such places to protect ourselves as well. Just as well as we don’t visit other places of pritzus, don’t go to mixed beaches, it is much better for your mind and for your soul!

Till the next, take care!
